Hello everybody! My name is Nina and I'm a senior at my High School this year. I have been in Broadcast technology for six semesters now. This web cite has all my videos from junior year and up. The paragraphs above the videos are my reflections on making the video and how I felt it turned out. I love trying new techniques and being creative! Feel free to explore my cite!
My first video for broadcasting this year turned out to be quite a challenge. My teacher gave me a great opportunity to work with schooltube on a promo for the Mid-America Emmy. The gave me all the b-roll and a script to use. This project gave me a lot of practice calling people I didn't know to set up interviews. I learned how to work with people with busy schedules. I ended up having to re-schedule the interview more than once and got stood-up at a Bread Co. because of miss communications. Working with b-roll that was given to me was also a learning experience because I had to learn how to find the right short clips that would make the video exiting.
This month I did a story on the new Ladue Early Childhood Center. My mom works in the building so it was easy for me to get interviews and b-roll because I had connections with the staff. Last year I did a video on why the old building wasn't working and why they needed a new one with a friend. So it was a different experience to do it by myself and it was cool to do a follow-up story. A pre-school is a great place for b-roll because most people love kids and bright colors, so making this video was a lot of fun. Some of the problems I have to work on is lighting. When I was getting all of my interviews and b-roll I didn't take the time to set of the right lighting, so when I got back to edit I had a lot of color correction to do. Hope you enjoy the video!
I decided to do something new and try to make a commercial for my project this month. I was going to enter into a contest online but I found out that a was one year to young. I continued with the project anyway. My commercial was for UPS My Choice. It was fun to be able to write my own script. Some of the problems I ran into was that when I was shooting I didn't get very many close-up shoots. This made the video kind of flat. Luckly I had one good close up I could put in.
Since I enjoyed doing something different last month I decided to think outside the box and do a short film. When I was trying to find music for the commercial I found this really cool song called FO-NIGHT RUNNER. It was great for action but I wanted to do something funny too, so I mixed the two together. This was a great experience for me to use some cool effects. Throughout the year I have struggled with color correction and this gave me a lot of practice working with it. This time I thought about most of my shoots before I went out and this made it easier to edit. Also I made sure to get different kinds of shoots including close-ups. I hope you like it!
For our Final we had to make a video on iMovie '11 based off of "I am..." in a trailer format. At first I wanted to do a video called "I am a Beach Bum" and use some of my friends videos she took on her iPhone during the summer. But she had some problems sending the video to me so it didn't work out. Luckily I had a back up idea, "I am a Swimmer." I swim for my schools swim team so it was easy for me to film part of my practice. Using iMovie '11 was a good experience because I haven't really used any other programs than Final Cut Pro. I liked how easy it was to make the video on iMovie but I didn't like that you don't have as much free rain as you do in Final Cut Pro. Enjoy!
It's a new year and I started this semester with a news story about a good friend of mine who is on the swim team with me. It was nice to have a connection with her because I was able to get her to talk about her life experiences with ease during the interview. Also I understood swimming so I new what shots that would look good. Some of the problems with doing a story with someone who is on the same team as you is being able to shoot a meet because I had to be in the meet too. During editing I had some trouble with color correction because the pool area in our school has horrible lighting. I had some trouble with having enough b-roll because I didn't get a lot of b-roll because I was in the meets too. But other than that editing went very smoothly. I hope you like it!
This Semester I had the opportunity to go to the METC. When I was there I meet the Spoede broadcast team and was surprised to learn they did their own announcements so I decided to do a story on them. This was the first time I worked with an HD camera so it added some challenges. I was unable to be at the METC on the day the Spoede kids were there so I had to relay on my classmates to film them for me. This forced me to plan my shoots ahead of time, which ended up helping me with my overall layout of the story. Editing went smoothly except I need to work on my microphone technique because I don't have much experience with VO. Somethings I have improved on are sequencing, storytelling, and camera angles. Enjoy!
This month I wanted to try something new so I teamed up with a girl in my broadcast class to make an educational music video. We wrote the rap to Kanye West's Gold-digger. We spent a long time writing the rap so it took up a lot of our editing time. But it was fun to get creative with words. Shooting this video wasn't to hard because we Knew what we needed to get before we went out to get. Also it was easier to control the shots we got. Editing this video was a challenge because we had to match the music to the words and then match the words with the video. Overall I'm proud of what we made. Hope you like it!
For the final this year we were told to pick out a past project from a different class and turn it into a video. I chose to turn an personal essay about nature into a video. In my essay I wrote about the ocean and since I didn't have access to one I decided to do it from my dads' perspective. He is really into gardening so I knew he would have a lot to say on the topic. The original assignment for the essay said to use rhetorical devices to show a different side of nature. I had fun trying to think of ways to use rhetorical devices in video. I had a few problems while I was editing because I found out that the mic had gone in and out during the interview so not all the audio was good. I decided to use some of it because the sound bites where to good to not use. I hope you enjoy my nature video!
Dear Teacher,
Video in the classroom can help a student learn to use rhetorical devices in new and different ways. I turned my personal essay on nature into a video. This would have been a good option in class because I learned to put rhetorical devices into video. Students would benefit from these skills because it helps you put these skills into a real life perspective.

My first story of the year was the first collaboration between our newspaper class and broadcast class. I worked with a print student and we planned questions together before the event. At the event having a partner made everything much smoother. I edited this video in one class period in order to get it online paired with the article my partner wrote. This was a great experience and it taught me a lot. Enjoy!
My second video of the year is about a new program in the school. I struggled with this video. My time management was horrible so when I was editing everything together at the last minute I wasn't able to re-shoot the bad video. I was forced to use the not so good shots which made the video look unprofessional. I did a second version of this story to improve my grade. I redid the interviews and shot new b-roll which made everything better. Also I worked on my color-correction skills. I am glad I had a chance to redo this story and learn from my mistakes. Take a look at both my videos and see if you find improvements.
After my time management problems with my last video I wanted to be more productive with this video. I decided to do another event because it's easy to get everything you need in one day. I went to a dance clinic my school's dance team put on for kids in my community. I spent the whole day at the event and interviewed way more people than I needed, just in case one did not work. I also shot a lot of b-roll which made editing so much easier. I had a lot of content to pick from. This project went much smoother than my last because I started on it right away and tried to finish it before the day of the deadline. Enjoy!
Since I have been doing news stories all year I decided to do something different. A fellow student and I love to watch SNL and we wanted to make a funny video like the ones they make. First we tried to write a skit of our own but it ended up only being funny to us, so we copied one of their digital shorts. But we made it more school appropriate. This video was really fun to make. My goal was to make my teacher laugh; mission accomplished. I hope you laugh too!
Our final for this semester was to make a music video that told a clear story. We had three 60 second songs to choose from: dramatic, simple, and upbeat. I decided to go with dramatic. This I have been dealing with a lot of stress due to applying to college so I wanted to express that stress through a video. I used quick shots and color to express stress. Editing went surprisingly fast because I had all my shots in the order of the video. I had a few shaking shots because I was trying to get some unique angles so I had to hold the camera. Now that I look back I can see how I could have positioned the tripod so it wouldn't have been shaky. I think this is my favorite final so far; I hope you like this video as much as I do!
I wanted to start 2013 off with a bang so I did a video about one of my favorite things: Dancing! My teacher showed me a very funny video on YouTube made by a newscaster in New York City. (The video is called Dance Walking) I wanted to try and do a spin-off. It was really fun to make but I wish I was more creative with my shots; they were all from the same angle. I should have gotten more close-ups. This was also my first stand-up in a very long time so it was a little stiff. I need to work on being more relaxed or real looking on camera. Other than that the video went well. I hope you have as much fun watching my video as I did making it.
Over the years I have wanted to try to make the intro for LadueView but I never had time until this month. I partnered with another girl in my class to make the intro to the show. We struggled to find the prefect idea to go with at first but then I saw the intro for Beyonce's Half Time show at the Super Bowl and we decided to try and re-create it. They used hundreds of pictures to create a fluid motion to count down to her performance. We went around our school and took lots of pictures of teachers and students and tried to do the same thing by creating movement with the pictures. This took a lot of time but I really enjoyed trying something new and different from what I normally do. Also working with a partner was fun and it was nice to have a different view point than my own when working on the project.
Sense I have had so much fun trying new things this semester I decided to try to do a music video. I have always wanted to do one but I was too nerves. In the past, I have only seen some weird corny music videos made by students. My goal was to make it as least corny as possible and I'm not sure I accomplished that. My teacher helped me find a cool song by Barcelona. The name of the song is "Falling Out of Trees." I wanted to tell a story of a girl who rediscovers nature in a spiritual way. It is kind of confusing but I was trying out abstract thoughts. Anyway I had fun editing it and trying out new techniques. I watched a lot of music videos and tried out some of the stuff the professionals were doing. Well I hope you enjoy it!
For my last LadueView project I wanted to do something I really enjoyed doing; so I did another funny video! I tried to recreate the SNL video "Garth and Cat." I think this was one of my best videos from this semester. I planned everything before hand so the filming went very smoothly. I used two cameras so I could use a variety of shot angles and this also made it easier to edit. We ran through the skit two times. Editing also went smoothly because of all my pre-planning. The only problems I ran into was having to cut the time down. I ended up having to cut down the first video I turned in because it wasn't as funny if it went on too long. Timing of the jokes was also kind of hard cause I had to balance the explanation of what is going on with the jokes. Enjoy!
